NEW SONG: Fighting Off A Bullet With A Rubber Band

rubberband.jpgAfter nearly 30 years of making music, one can imagine that there are several musical personas that have taken up residence in me. There is the Pink Floyd/The The/Radiohead guy, dark, brooding and epic. There is the Beatlesque Lennon/Bowie guy who currently is just STARVING to get out and make more Uri Geller Spoons. But the musical identity that has created the largest amount of material over the years is a guy that I call simply “George Zhen”. He’s a straightforward songsmith in the vein of REM, Tom Petty and the Counting Crows.

That’s who is visiting you today, pulling out a song I’ve had for a while. The production was interrupted by various studio and creative glitches, but now it is done. Guitars, pianos, natural drums and basses.

So, I present to you “Fighting Off A Bullet With A Rubber Band”…

Since I generally find my life very satisfying, autobiographical subject matter is rarely my forte. I mean, what fun is there in penning a tune about how happy you are with everything? I’m not going to write a song about walking my dog (Sorry Lucy). So consider this song something of a rarity, an autobiographical indulgence inspired by my soulmate. She’s saved me more than once, as this song proclaims.

Special thanks and props go out to the fantastic Sam Weitzner whose harmonica brilliance is showcased here. One of his many talents. I can’t thank him enough for his contribution.

And as always, thanks for listening!

Fighting Off A Bullet With A rubber Band
Lyrics and Music by George Zhen

Cover me with your raincoat
Protect me from the stars that are gonna fall
You say you love me
And I suppose
It’s only fair that you’re warned

From the day I was born
I’ve been holding on to a rope that’s torn
Building all my castles in the quicksand
And fighting off a bullet with a rubber band
And all my mistakes are kept on file
At the local Bureau of denial
Put on display on the very first floor
For the brave and the utterly bored

You tell me that you’re not frightened
I might believe you for a day
Then you’ll wonder
How did all of this happen?
How did I end up this way?

From the night I turned 17
I’ve been hypnotized by a headlight beam
Building all my castles in the quicksand
And fighting off a bullet with a rubber band
And all of my failures are carefully set
Up in the global gallery of regret
Something to cherish or be freely ignored
By the brave and the utterly bored

Surprise me with the answer
To the question of your sanity
Protect me with your trenchcoat
I don’t know how this can be

From the time I turned 25
I’ve been the luckiest asshole alive
Building all my castles in the quicksand
And fighting off a bullet with a rubber band
And all of my dreams are played every day
At the local cinema, matinee
With showings at twelve o’clock, two-thirty and four
For the brave and the utterly bored

Cover me with your raincoat
Protect me from the stars that are gonna fall
